The Open Letter of 1971 stated unequivocally the opposition of Namibian Churches to South Africa’s occupation of Namibia and its racist policies. It concluded with this firm statement: The Church Boards’ urgent wish is for a peaceful solution to the problems of our land and will see to it that human rights be put into operation and that Namibia may become a self-sufficient and independent state.
The Open Letter signified a seismic shift in Christian doctrines and marked the replacement of the “Two Kingdoms” doctrine with a new theology of liberation and political conscientisation to struggle for freedom and independence.
